What is Jeep 4xe Technology?

As manufacturers all sprint to attain electrification goals set for the by various governing bodies the world over, no one is exempt from developing a line-up of cars with EV or hybrid tech. That includes Jeep, who recently turned to the 4xe plug-in hybrid tech to start the transformation of their line-up to meet these demands.

In North America, that starts with applying some of the tech to the Wrangler.

Jeep 4xe Technology Brings the Advantages of a Plug-in Hybrid to the Jeep Wrangler

While the Wrangler is already available with a number of engine choices in a number of configurations – turbocharged four-cylinder, V-6, EcoDiesel – Jeep isn’t done yet with the addition of the 4xe plug-in hybrid (PHEV) version announced in 2020.

The 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe comes equipped with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged gas motor as well as two electric motors and a 17-kWh lithium-ion, nickel manganese cobalt battery pack for a total combined power output of 375 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque. That’s more torque than what’s made by the EcoDiesel engine.

In order to keep the hybrid system as compact as possible, Jeep has mounted one of the motors to the eight-speed automatic transmission and has combined the battery charger and DC/DC converter into a single, compact unit as opposed to installing them as two separate units.

In addition to that, the battery has been placed up under the rear seat which will help better protect it from the mud, dust, sand and water that many 4xe owners are sure to tackle, as well as help maintain the ground clearance that Wrangler owners have come to expect. It just goes to show you that while the 4xe is going to help improve the Wrangler’s efficiency it will be able to handle the same sort of rugged terrain that its stablemates have always been able to.

It doesn’t stop there for the 4xe tech, either.

For starters, both the Renegade and Compass models have already received the 4xe treatment in European markets, so Jeep has had plenty of time to develop the technology to make sure it can excel no matter which market it’s in.

Further, as Jeep looks to electrify all of its models over the next few years, the 4xe technology will be appearing in a number of products, and is what’s found under the hood of the recently-revealed Wagoneer Concept – indeed, Wagoneer itself is going to be a brand unto itself aimed at luxury buyers and the fact that 4xe tech is going to be found there is a good indicator of just how seriously Jeep is developing the Wagoneer brand.
